What Is a “Retinol Sandwich”— and Should You Try It?

Retinol is derived from vitamin A and is typically used in the creation of skincare products. It’s said to work wonders with wrinkles and aging, and can magically smooth out fine lines. Not only that, it’s also said to brighten up dull complexions and lighten discolorations. So what exactly is a “retinol sandwich” and is it worth adding to your skincare routine?

What Is a Retinol Sandwich?

Think of what makes up a sandwich: two pieces of bread and the filling. The moisturizer of choice is the bread and the retinol is the filler.  This is supposed to reduce the absorption rate and lower the possibility of any irritation. This sandwich, as people call it, is said to be beneficial for people who suffer from sensitive skin or simply don’t tolerate retinol well.

Placing a barrier between the skin and the product helps to reduce contact with the skin, which is what often causes the irritation linked with its use. This can significantly hydrate dry skin, control the absorption rate of the retinoid product, and allow users to customize the concentration when using it often.

A Nightly Routine

If you want to try incorporating the “sandwich” into your nighttime skincare routine, it’s easy to do. Start by cleansing the skin, applying your moisturizer of choice, adding a layer of retinol, and finishing with a second layer of moisturizer.

This should only be done in the evening since retinol can cause redness or burning when exposed to sunlight. You should also start off slowly by incorporating the sandwich only one or two days a week. You can do it more often once your skin gets used to it.

The Cons of Sandwiching

Even though this is said to be a more gentle method to introduce retinol to your skin, some people have reported to have suffered from irritation, redness, or even dryness.

This is usually the case for people who have extremely sensitive skin or suffer from reactions to most skincare products. Should this occur, discontinue with this regime immediately.
